The Band Blog 29/06/08 (Graham) We had a really great time playing at Kirsty's (Sean's girlfriend) 18th Birthday Party. The weather was really good and the food laid on by Alison was fantastic. So 2 weeks running we've played outside in a tent and it hasn't rained!
23/06/08 (Graham) A great afternoon at Music In The Park at Alphington. It was fantastic playing in a Big Top. Everyone seemed to really enjoy our set. I also played for The Cornelius Family which worked well. We managed to pick up a couple of new gigs as a result of our performance. we have been asked to play at another Music In The Park at Heavitree (There will be a different drummer for that one as I'm in France then). And Also a gig at Alphington British Legion.
DUFFLEBAG’S
5TH ANNIVERSARY GIG GOES FULL-CIRCLE On Saturday [3 May] The Dufflebags had a great gig at The Dolphin Inn, Kenton. They used this performance as an excuse to celebrate their 5th anniversary. Personally, I thought it was one of our best performances, and we have had some good ones of late. As a band, over the five years we have grown more tighter, professional, and more interesting to pub audiences. I think all the hard work over time has really paid off. I think our gig at The Dolphin really put across how much we have transformed over the years. When we started we were kind of a low-key band, quite easy listening. Half of our set was made up of original songs and the other half of folk/rock songs from my solo repertoire or soft-rock songs. No one could dance to us then. Now, we have largely abandoned the original songs and are doing rock classics like Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Smoke on the Water and Teenage Kicks, and now people are dancing to us. It’s pretty weird Because of the gig’s placement in the Dufflebags calendar [nearing the 5th anniversary date – May 16th to be exact – the date of their first ever gig] it was all too tempting for the band to delve into the archives of their past setlists and pull out some old material. “We all wanted to keep the majority of our current setlist as it was for this gig. We knew at The Dolphin we couldn’t go back to doing our old slower-tempo songs and originals. But I always wanted to somehow through a song or two pay homage to our fifth anniversary. We added Day Has Come, which was an early gig opener. But the one I was most excited about adding to the set was our encore: Things We Do For Money. This was the opening song to our first gig and so it seemed appropriate that the song that began our first 5 years should be the one to conclude them. I believe in things going full circle and that is the effect that I hope came across on the night.” The
set also included some long-term set favorites “All in all it was a great evening and it was nice to see some faces that have seen us for all our five years, who could appreciate how far we have come, as well, as we can. We all really appreciate the support and we hope to see you “Further on up the Road”” Although no date has been fixed for the third performance at The Dolphin the band are pretty confident they will be asked back pretty soon. So watch this space…… The Dufflebags now have a break with no more planned gigs for the rest of the month. The next one on the cards is a shorter set, as part of Alphington Music in the Park on 21 June. More details will arrive on this gig to come. At
the back end of the year [29 November], the band will be heading back out to
Gladstone House, part of
20/04/08 Well we've just had 2 gigs in a week. the first at Wonford Sports Hall to celebrate some of Jo's friends 30Th Anniversary. It was a real big family affair with loads of booze and food. we played from 7 to 9. And everyone seemed to enjoy it. Just after we finished playing and the disco started a family row broke out and the fuzz appeared. But it had all calmed down by the time we were packed up and ready to go. The second gig was at The Showman on Friday night and we played in the Carousel Suite supported by the Old Porch Boys. The OPB played some great Bluegrass and the also had an Apalachian Clog Dancer with them. We had a visit by a crowd of biker types who really enjoyed some of the old rock numbers. We finished playing at 12.00 a really good evening. Also we have just missed out on a gig in France. We were invited to play at Le Touquet where they were having a music festival in the streets of the town. Unfortunately we had previously agreed to play The Party In The Park at Alphington on the same day. Quelle domage!
