·        This Dufflebags outing brought them to the wilds of Chumleigh for a cracking bonfire party, courtesy of Lord and Lady Wood.

·        The band performed in Lord Wood’s House, a residence, now being restored.

·        The evening kicked off with the £700 worth firework display, which was impressive to say the least.

·        After food we performed two sets to a friendly and enthusiastic audience including 'Inspector Brownlow' from The Bill.

·        For this performance Guitarist Matt Leach stepped in replacing Sean Davies who had a prior commitment with Notch.

·        This show featured the debut of Horse with no Name [America], Fifteen Years [Levellers] & Be Lucky [Show of Hands]

·        Also notable was the fact that the band performed using their own new monitors, after years of borrowing some from other people.

·        The set list for this show is very similar to the Chumleigh set, except the order of the second half was changed.

·        The Village Inn jam sessions that ran until this month were hosted by a resident band, Traffic Jam, that featured both Sean Davies on Electric Guitar and Graham Pickard on drums. Along with Derek on Rhythm guitar, Jo Davies-Black on Bass and Gary on vocals the band performed a set in between our two sets.

·        Martyn Cornelius played Mandolin and sang backing vocals on Traffic Jam’s opening song, Ride on [Christy Moore]

Set 2 :

Further on up the Road / Like a Hurricane / Neon Blue / Fifteen Years / Teenage Kicks / No more Heroes /

Losing my Religion

Encore:  Go Buddy Go

Notes:

·        This performance was for the students of the Marjon University, who had all undertaken a Teacher Training course and were being presented with medals for their achievements.

·        From about 4 songs in the evening turned into more of a glorified practice session for the band, rather than a proper gig. Students, who had come for the meal and the presentations began to leave as the music started, not wanting to stay up to watch a live band. By the start of set 2 there was only one table of 4 left watching us, enjoying their own private band playing.

·        Because of lack of support the band took out some of the planned songs and also swapped some old songs for new ones they weren’t going to perform.

·        There were 5 new songs premiered but these are not referenced until the December 7th Showman gig (see below).

Notes:

·        As promised by Martyn on the Dufflebags newsletter this set featured 9 new songs. These were: A Forest (The Cure) / Saturday Man (The Dufflebags) / Everything must Go (Oyster Band) / The One I Love (R.E.M.) /     Whiskey in the Jar (Trad. arr Thin Lizzy / Metallica) /  Like a Hurricane (Neil Young) / Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple) / Teenage Kicks (The Undertones) / Go Buddy Go (The Stranglers)

·        The show really altered the typical structure and tone of a Dufflebags set. Losing my Religion, after years of ending the evening, was moved to end the 1st half. Many of the originals were sacrificed to perform cover songs that pub punters usually prefer to hear. The set was different to what has come to be expected from the band. There were more rock classics added like Whiskey in the Jar, Smoke on the Water and Teenage Kicks, to go alongside existing classics like the aforementioned, Losing my Religion, Another Brick in the Wall, Babylon and several energetic Stranglers songs, including No More Heroes. The band has also been drawn closer to heavier rock, punk and metal over the last couple of years and this was the continuation of that. Take for example the dark gothic rocker, A Forest, a song by The Cure, which marks a departure for the band. The set was much more commercial, to that end, as well, largely featuring songs and sounds that people in pubs respond to and are therefore more appropriate. This is something the band has worked hard to achieve and this set was the payoff. The first intention was to create a set that would sound fresh and interesting to not only people that had not seen the band before but to alter the perceptions of those who have known them since the beginning, demonstrating how much they have changed and developed since their early, predominantly acoustic, days. The second, and most important, intention was to create a strong set of songs which would continue and improve their success on the pub circuit and this performance was a step in the right direction.
